Scythia was an empire comprised of semi-nomadic tribes of people who lived in the
siberian-Russian region of Europe between the 8th and 3rd century BCE. They were
revered, feared, agile and swift warriors whose horse riding abilities and complex and
elaborate culture allowed them to overpower their neighbors and anyone who
got in their way, solidifying their customs and traditions in history. They were
seen by their foes as barbaric and savage who's livelihood revolved around quick
and cunning raids.
They raided and conquered rival territories and tribes to establish themselves as one
of the most powerful empires in the region, moving through modern day syria and
(temporarily) to the borders of Egypt. this showing characteristics of not only a barbaric
people, but a people who could sustain a functioning empire.
The Scythians were also considered advanced as a civilisation, being master craftsmen and
conquerers. They produced impressive treasures and weapons made from gold,
developed intricate customs and practices including the use of tattoos (which would not be
seen for thousands of years after the fall of the Scythian people), elaborate burial
ceremonies for their leaders and used hallucinogenic drugs. Their tattoos however, really
set them apart as a society to others within the region, having been one of the first recorded
groups of people to utilise such a form of artwork. Many of the Scythian human remains
found today show distinctive and elaborate tattoo designs that are both realistic and accurate
in their themes, ranging from wild animals to mythical beings. speculation has also arisen that their
tattoos were medicinal and served as a sort of ancient acupuncture, again a practice which would
not be seen for thousands of years.
